Container imports rebound
The port of Gothenburg posted record-breaking container throughput in Q1/2024, surpassing previous levels. Last year, exports drove record numbers, but imports declined nearly 20% due to high interest rates and a weak Swedish krona.
This trend reversed in 2024, with imports up 11% from the same period in 2023, signalling a return to pre-pandemic levels. The port handled a total of 242,000 teu, marking an 8% overall increase and the highest for a single quarter. Rail transport of containers also grew by 1% to 126,000 teu.
Energy product handling rose by 10%, while dry bulk volumes fell by 30%. The new vehicles and ro-ro units segment registered a slight drop of 2%. The port also saw an 11% increase in passenger numbers, the highest since 2018 for the period. (pb)
