Container flows stronger in Northern Europe
The container throughput index published by the RWI Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) rose by 0.8 points to 122.8 points (revised) in December 2021.
The index for Chinese ports showed a decline this time, shrinking from 128.6 to 126.4 points, while the index for Europe’s Northern Range took a leap, climbing from 114.3 points to 115.8 points (revised). The RWI/ISL index for January 2021 will be published on 28 February 2022.
Torsten Schmidt, RWI’s head of economic research, pointed out that “container throughput has increased on a global scale. This is likely to have contributed to a slight easing of supply chain bottlenecks in some areas. However, the renewed sharp decline in container throughput in Chinese ports could be an indication that delivery problems will worsen in the coming months.” (sh)
