Container flows not peaking yet

In September 2022, the container throughput index published by the RWI Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) surged to 126.8 points from the 125.9 points (seasonally adjusted) registered the month before, according to the latest flash estimate.

Throughput in the Chinese ports continued to improve, with the index growing moderately from 135.1 to 136.4 points. In contrast, the index for Europe’s North Range declined slightly from 115.5 (revised) to 115.0 points. The RWI/ISL index for October 2022 will be published on 30 November 2022.

Torsten Schmidt, RWI’s head of economic research, considered the rising container volumes as "still quite stable on the upside. By contrast, container throughput in Europe has been much weaker since the summer. The economic slowdown due to rising energy prices seems to be having a greater impact on container handling here than in the rest of the world.”
