Connecting sea and air in Hong Kong

The Airport Authority Hong Kong is working with Dongguan Port Group on the development of the latter’s Dongguan Logistics Park. Dongguan envisages intermodal transhipment services from sea to air, directly connecting the park with the airport.

This arrangement enables cargo security screening, palletisation, and airline acceptance for export cargo of the Greater Bay Area to be completed in Dongguan before shipping the cargo to Hong Kong International Airport. This may save 50% of previous costs and 1/3 of the processing time.

The hub can handle 1 million t annually on an area of 20 hectares. It includes autonomous guided vehicles and customised containers. Hong Kong’s International Airport was named “Best Global Airport” at the 2023 Asian Freight, Logistics and Supply Chain Awards for the eighth consecutive year. (mk)
