Commercial adoption of OCC hinges on regulations
According to DNV’s latest whitepaper, onboard carbon capture (OCC) is seen as a promising method for reducing emissions in the shipping industry while continuing to use conventional fuels. However, its commercial viability hinges on collaboration between regulators, policymakers, industry stakeholders, class societies, and suppliers.
The whitepaper explores the technical, economic, operational, and regulatory challenges of OCC and its integration into the carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) value chain. While OCC has potential, its economic competitiveness and regulatory acceptance are critical.
The EU emissions trading system (ETS) currently offers incentives for OCC, but broader regulatory frameworks are needed to credit captured CO2 and encourage adoption. Achieving IMO decarbonisation targets will require thorough investigation and collaboration on OCC and other technologies. (pb)
