Coming soon: autonomous distribution yards
In a market first, Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America (MEAA) has introduced “Hub Pilot”, a platform as a service (PaaS) to support autonomous distribution yard logistics.
The technology uses infrastructure-based perception, high-definition mapping and sensors to facilitate distribution and yard management. It employs optimised multi-sensor inputs on autonomous yard dogs, also known as rovers or terminal tractors, to keep an overview of the rovers’ locations and manage the distribution process.
Rovers can independently connect with trailers and transport them to a designated location. While they are completely autonomous, they can also be operated manually if needed.
Hub Pilot is still in its development phase and is set for launch in 2025 in North America. It is designed specifically for geofenced distribution or logistics hubs and could also be used for airports, seaports and larger facilities. (mk)
