Comeback for German inland navigation
Germany has witnessed a slight recovery in inland shipping of late, according to a recent press release from the country’s federal statistical office (Destatis).
While total transport volumes increased by 3.8% in 2021, the total volume of goods transported is 4.9% lower than before the outbreak of Covid-19. In total, 195 million t of goods were transported on German inland waterways.
In 2020, the transported goods weighed 188 million t. Despite the increase compared to the previous year, the transport volume in 2021 was less than in the pre-Covid-19 year of 2019, when the transport of goods by inland waterway came to 205 million t. (sh)
