Colombo Port grants concession
The Sri Lanka government has given the green light to build a new container terminal in the country’s main port, Colombo. The West Container Terminal (WCT) will be run by companies selected by the governments of India and Japan.
A similar plan was abandoned after protests from trade unions in 2019, and the East Container Terminal at Colombo Port was then developed by the public Ports Authority SLPA alone.
The West Container Terminal will now see the day on a build, operate and transfer basis of a 35 years-concession as a public-private company including the Ports Authority and Indian and Japanese companies. While India has already selected Adani ports, Japan has not named its investor yet. (cd)
