Coal rich region Xinjiang gets new rail service
China Railway Urumqi Group has established the Lanzhou-Xinjiang railway that connects the coal-rich northeast Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in northwest China with wider areas in the east.
The first train, carrying 3,700 t of coal, ran along the 435.6 km track in week 1/2019. A subsidiary of Guanghui Energy constructed the railway over the past six years.
With the new railway, coal can be sent to Sichuan and Chongqing in southwest China, and Inner Mongolia, Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei in northern China. The rail link will be able to haul some 39.5 million t of coal per year. China Railway Urumqi Group expects to achieve the 150 million t level in the future. (ben)
