CO2 partnership to link Bahrain with Japan

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and Bapco Energies have signed an MOU to jointly develop a CO2 transport and sequestration system. The partners aim to establish a carbon capture and storage (CCS) value chain, involving MOL's maritime transport of liquefied CO2 and Bapco Energies’ sequestration sites in Bahrain.

The partnership will focus on estimating costs for CO2 storage, exploring potential markets in the Asia Pacific region, and discussing future business structures. The agreement aligns with Bahrain's goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060, leveraging the country's ample CO2 storage capacity and MOL's expertise in infrastructure development beyond traditional shipping.

CCS technology, essential for capturing and storing CO2 from exhaust gas underground, is seen as a key solution for a low-carbon/decarbonised society.

With their collaboration the partners are taking a significant step towards ensuring sustainable and eco-friendly connections between Bahrain with Asia-Pacific regions. (pb)
