CMSA shatters rail volume record
The terminal operator Contecon Manzanillo (CMSA) in Mexico, part of ICTSI, posted a record in January, handling 20,400 teu of rail cargo, a 68% increase from January 2023 and the highest rail throughput in Manzanillo. The use of rail for cargo has been crucial for CMSA's growth, with 23% of import cargo moved by rail in January.
CMSA and CMA CGM launched a block train service last year, linking the second specialised container terminal to Valle de Mexico and Monterrey. CMSA plans to double its rail volume by 2025, with investments in rail track expansion and new equipment. This shift to railfreight helps reduce road congestion, improves sustainability, and supports regional and national economic growth. (pb)
