Chinese ports coming back

In June 2022, the container throughput index published by the RWI Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) grew to 126.1 points from 124.9 points (seasonally adjusted) the month before, according to the latest flash estimate.

This upturn can be attributed to the Chinese ports, where the index surged from 134.7 to 140.5 points. In contrast, the index for Europe’s North Range declined from 112.9 (revised) to 111.2 points. The RWI/ISL index for July 2022 will be published on 31 August 2022.

Torsten Schmidt, RWI’s head of economic research: “The revival of container throughput in China gave global trade a significant boost in June. The European ports are now beginning to feel the effects of the disruptions in the supply chains over the past few months. Restrictions in the trade with Russia are also having an impact.” (sh)
