China's performance balancing world trade
The container throughput index of the RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) rose from 122.3 points (seasonally adjusted) to 123.3 points in October, according to the current flash estimate.
The Chinese ports' index showed a substantial increase, surging from 128.5 to 131.7. The European North Range index lost moderately, shrinking from 114.3 (revised) to 113.1 points. The RWI/ISL container throughput index for November 2021 will be published on 22 December 2021.
RWI's head of economic research Torsten Schmidt comments rather cautiously: "Container handling has been stagnating for a few months now. Because of the renewed increase in the number of Corona infections, it cannot be expected that the index will soon resume its positive pre-crisis trend." (sh)
