China leads in seafarer pay increases

China has experienced the highest increases in seafarer wages among the main seafaring countries in recent years, according to Drewry's latest manning annual review and forecast report.

As the second-largest supplier of seafarers to international merchant shipping, accounting for around 11% of the global sea-based workforce, China continues to grow as a key source. The demand for officers is growing, with more officers employed internationally on various vessel types.

Within mainland China, the job market for ratings remains robust due to the strong economy, which creates competition between sea-based and onshore jobs. This competition has led to significant pay rises for ratings. The report highlights that the wage growth in China, particularly in the dry cargo sector, has surpassed 5%, though wage changes vary in sectors, ranks, and nationalities. (pb)
