China driving EV business in South Africa

Electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corporation (Saic) and a South African dealer has formed Maxus Electric Vehicles to sell Chinese-made commercial EVs to offer urban logistics fleets access to EVs.

Early customers in South Africa such as Woolworths and DSV have already zoomed past 1,000,000 km while saving over 220,000 kg of carbon emissions. Maxus EV saves more than 1 t of carbon emissions each month, Saic said.

Maxus will initially focus on the Gauteng market, with the opening of one of South Africa’s first all-electric vehicle centres in Menlyn, Pretoria. Launches will follow in Cape Town, Durban and other metropolitan areas at a later date. (ben)
