China connected again
Railfreight operations are returning to routes linking China and Western Europe. Davies Turner has reported that its weekly direct railfreight import service from China to the UK was resumed in mid-March. Tony Cole, Davies Turner’s head of supply chain services, said that “our Express China Rail Service didn’t operate – as is usual every year – during the Chinese new year’s festivities. Then it had to be suspended on account of the Wuhan coronavirus / Covid-19.”
As Wuhan, the epicentre of the epidemic, remains closed down, and local factories were only expected to re-open in mid-March or thereabouts, railfreight operations have now resumed from the Xi’an railway junction, the eastern endpoint of the Silk Road, to Duisburg (Germany).
