Chile: dramatic rise in freight crime
The pandemic-induced measures reduced the incidence of cargo theft in Chile. But now, after the Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted, levels of crime have sprung back with vengeance to 27% higher than pre-pandemic levels, according to a new report.
The underlying factors seem to be predominantly social and economic in nature. Inflation, rising costs of living and social unrest have motivated individuals to turn to crime.
The report also found that criminal organisations are behind many of these thefts. They have exploited to a greater degree than in the past the staff employed in the supply chain, to provide valuable data and information on cargo flows, the nature of loads and ways to falsify delivery instructions.
