Check vessel designs to avoid costly claims
Itic has stressed the need for thorough vessel design reviews and insurance coverage during construction, following a USD 5 million claim involving a 24 m catamaran. The vessel experienced operational limitations due to unexpected vibration issues, which were attributed to cavitation from the original propeller designs.
Despite attempts to rectify the issue, including modifications proposed by the naval architect, the vessel failed to meet its performance specifications. This led to a legal dispute, with the vessel's owners seeking damages for rectification costs, loss of earnings, and other expenses.
The naval architect settled for a USD 400,000 contribution, less than 10% of the original claim, covered by Itic. This case underscores the importance of adhering to design specifications and having adequate insurance to manage risks associated with maritime design and construction. (pb)
