The falling fuel prices over the past few years have shifted many a haulage job from the railways back to the roads. Now ONE Europe is ramping up its commitment to the use of the railways in hinterland traffic to and from maritime gateways.
Plans to cut emissions are one thing, their concrete implementation another. The European arm of the Japanese shipping line alliance Ocean Network Express (ONE) is now integrating more intermodal elements into its hinterland transport operations on the old continent.
Ocean Network Express (Europe) Ltd (ONE) has adopted CO2-neutral rail transport services run by Metrans for its European network; thus it is now a partner in the ‘HHLA Pure’ scheme, a rail service linking the ports of Bremerhaven, Hamburg and Koper to the German and Central European hinterland in a way that the provider says is sustainable.
Solutions said to be ‘pure’ and ‘neutral’
Metrans deploys modern CO2-optimised hybrid and electric locomotives, electrification in port terminals, and handling with largely electrified processes. Any remaining unavoidable CO2 emissions are offset through climate-protection projects with international certificates. The measures are all certified by the independent German accreditation body TÜV.
Moving containers by train is considered amongst the most environment-friendly forms of transport. By procuring TÜV-certified services, ONE will be able to pass its environmental efforts on to its clients and provide them with carbon-neutral certificates. A whole series of players in the supply chain thus benefit from the measures.
