CGN opens new goods control centre

Cologne Bonn airport (CGN) has launched a new goods control point at its ‘Cargo West’ facility, marking the first of three construction projects at the new interface to the security area.

The facility, built in 15 months at a cost of around EUR6 million, is where all goods destined for the security zone will now be unloaded, checked, and forwarded airside.

CEO Thilo Schmid said that the investment lays the foundation for more efficient delivery processes. Two further projects are planned: a border control station and a new entrance gate for heavy goods vehicles.

The building features sustainable elements, including a wood-hybrid structure, rooftop solar panels powering electric forklifts, a rainwater cistern, visible technical installations to reduce materials and the site’s first heat pump. The new Z40 gate east of the inspection office is expected to open in September. (ah)
