Central Anatolian rail line reopened

In Turkey, the rail stretch connecting Samsun to Siva in Central Anatolia has been reopened for freight operation. The line was closed for five years and is now upgraded.

The Turkish state-owned rail company TCDD has improved the entire infrastructure along the 378-km long line Samsun – Kalin near Siva including the renewing of the tracks, the installation of the signalling system ERTMS as well as the renovation and building of bridges.

The upgrade speeds up the trains and reduces travel times: the journey between the port of Samsun at the Black Sea and Sivas is now about five hours, almost half of the previous running time. The modernisation cost EUR 350 million, of which EUR 240 million was funded by the EU. (ben)
