CBP acts against forced labour

In March, the USA’s Customs and Border Protection agency (CBP) instructed staff to seize gloves produced by the Top Glove Corporation in Malaysia at US ports of entry.

Now personnel in Cleveland have seized 3.97 million Top Glove disposable gloves, due to information indicating they may have been made by forced labour. The USD 518,000 shipment was seized after an inspection by officers revealed the gloves were produced by a Top Glove subsidiary in Malaysia.

Diann Rodriguez, the CBP’s area port director in Cleveland said that “this seizure shows that CBP won’t tolerate imports made by forced labour, a form of modern slavery that hurts vulnerable workers and threatens our economy.” US federal statutes prohibit the import of merchandise produced by convict, forced or indentured labour.
