Caution due to unclear situation in Ukraine
What can be said from a logistics point of view on the first day of the Russian attack on Ukraine, whose airspace is now closed to civilian air traffic? Naturally, in a first phase of armed conflict, airport infrastructure is a prime target. For example, there has apparently been heavy fighting around Kiev-GML airport, the base of Antonov Airlines with the world's only AN-225.
The Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) has expressed its concern about the 480 employees of the terminal that it has been operating in Odessa since 2001. CEO Angela Titzrath: "The HHLA executive board decided this morning to pay one monthly salary in advance. ... Our thoughts and solidarity in these hours are with the people of Ukraine and especially the people of Odessa. Against this background, I join the numerous appeals to the Russian president to immediately stop the attack on Ukraine and to withdraw Russian troops."
Maersk has decided not to call any ports in Ukraine until further notice and will stop the acceptance of orders to and from Ukraine until further notice. Services in Russia, meanwhile, currently remain available "but are potentially subject to change as things develop." (ah)
