Carbon-neutral voyages are almost possible
Odfjell’s chemical tanker "Bow Olympus" is completing a milestone voyage across the Atlantic using wind-assisted propulsion and 100% sustainable biofuel. Real-time data confirms that the vessel saves about five tons of fuel daily, reducing CO₂ emissions by 15 t per day and improving GHG intensity by 85%.
The four 22-m suction sails exceeded expectations, delivering up to 40% fuel savings under optimal conditions. Combined with AI-based weather routing, the technology demonstrates a feasible path to near-net-zero emissions without technical retrofits.
"Bow Olympus'" performance meets 2050 FuelEU Maritime and IMO targets today, proving that deep-sea shipping can achieve substantial emissions reductions using existing solutions. (ah)
