Canadian container terminal changes hands
PSA International has acquired the terminal Ceres Halifax in the Port of Halifax from NYK. From now on, PSA Halifax will operate two container terminals in Halifax, Atlantic Hub and Fairview Cove, jointly branded under PSA Halifax.
The Atlantic Hub terminal is located at the south end of the city and investments have transformed its mega vessel handling capability over the past two years. The Fairview Cove terminal, at the north end of the city, will complement Atlantic Hub’s existing operations for vessels of up to 8,000-teu capacity.
The joint operations will allow the Fairview Cove terminal to build on its extensive railhead, ro-ro (roll-on roll-off) capabilities and location to drive greater connectivity for shippers. At the terminal, additional westbound service options made available to importers from North Europe and California dovetail with weekly South Asia vessels.
Canada’s regulatory authorities, which from December on had taken a closer look at PSA International’s proposed acquisition of Ceres leaving Halifax with one container terminal operator, voiced no objection to the deal. (sh)
