Brittany now also runs on LNG
Brittany Ferries and Wartsilä Cooperation have inked a long-term agreement to support the new LNG-fuelled ferry. The cooperation concerns in particular the solutions installed on Brittany Ferries’ latest ro-pax vessel, the ‘Salamanca’.
The ten-year agreement was signed in December 2021. The ferry was inaugurated on 25 March 2022 and started its first commercial sailing from Portsmouth to Bilbao on 27 March. The ’Salamanca’ is the first LNG-fuelled ferry to operate from UK.
The vessel’s multi-fuel Wärtsilä engines are also adapted to utilise even cleaner fuels, such as synthetic or bio-methane, as and when they become available.
The service agreement also includes remote operational support and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and advanced diagnostics to identify anomalous equipment or system behaviour. The ‘Salamanca’ was built at the CMJL (China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Weihai)) facilities in China. (sh)
