Bridge in Zambia re-opened for freight trains
The Chambeshi railway bridge on the Chambeshi River in Kanchibiya District, Zambia has been re-opened following the completion of repair works. However, passage is currently limited to freight trains travelling at a restricted running speed, as readings are taken to gauge the bridge performance and suitability for full train operations in the next two weeks.
The Zambian government has engaged Jiangsu Gold Civil Construction to carry out the repair works at a cost of USD 1.6 million.
The bridge across Chambeshi River was damaged in May 2021 after a goods train hit into the steel pillars. The bridge is an important rail link along the 1,860 km Tanzania-Zambia Railway (Tazara) line. (ben)
