Bremerhaven container terminal 50 years old
In mid-September 1971 the ‘Containerkreuz Bremerhaven’ opened - and set a milestone on Bremerhaven's way to becoming Europe's top-ranking ports. Five years earlier, the first container had been unloaded in Germany, in Bremen's overseas port.
It quickly became clear that a successful container terminal, called CT1 today, could not be located within the city of Bremen. So the upcoming revolution in maritime transport took place in Bremen's overseas port in Bremerhaven.
The building of a container handling terminal on the open tidal stream was a project without precedent. The quay had to be able to cope with other loads than facilities for passenger traffic or general cargo handling. An area of 750,000 sqm provided sufficient space for steel containers.
300,000 teu were handled in 1971. Today, the Wilhelm Kaisen container terminal has 14 berths and 90 connections for refrigerated containers. The last expansion was completed in 2008. But even after 50 years of container port, one thing is clear: port development is never over. (cd)
