Breaking ground for a new terminal
Ambrogio Intermodal has started building its new terminal in Domegliara, Verona (Italy). Located on the Brenner route, the new facility will be used to strengthen intermodal rail-road connections on the north-south European corridor. The project, covering a space of about 110,000 sqm, includes five tracks up to 700 m long. A warehouse and administrative buildings are also part of the plan.
Intermodal operations are scheduled to begin before the end of 2022, with the completion of the first three tracks and the yard. The company plans to install a gantry crane, a reach stacker and two terminal tractors. Upon full completion of the project, the new terminal will be able to operate more than 3,000 intermodal train pairs per year.
Ambrogio, founded in 1969, has been present in Domegliara since summer 2020, when it launched the intermodal connection to Neuss, Germany, operating from the adjacent Valpolicella railway terminal. The frequency of this service was recently augmented from two to three departures per week in each direction.
The terminal in Domegliara is Ambrogio’s third terminal in Italy, after Candiolo, Turin, and Gallarate, Varese, and will be the group's largest in Europe in terms of space.
The total cost of this new facility will exceed the sum of EUR 12 million - a private investment. Pieralberto Vecchi, CEO of Ambrogio Intermodal commented: "The current facilities are not sufficient to meet the growing demand for sustainable transport in Europe." (cd)
