Boxes keep coming at Koper
The container terminal at the Adriatic Port of Koper set a new monthly record in March this year. Cargo handling volumes scratched the threshold of 100,000 containers for the first time. The more than 99,500 teu handled surpassed the previous record of 97,000 teu set exactly one year ago, in March 2021.
Yet, the Port Authority also noted a change in proceedings: "Due to the occupation of back-end warehouses in the wider region and problems in the logistics chains, containers are staying longer at the terminal, which, combined with higher throughput, has an impact on the yard occupancy within terminal."
The Port of Koper has responded to this situation by increasing the amount of warehouse space and staff. In addition, in the hinterland of Basin 3, a concession for the transformation of 115,000 sqm into warehousing space is in the making. Thus, the container terminal also saw another record in March, handling more than 10,000 teu from a single vessel. (sh)
