Bottleneck for heavy traffic eliminated
The new bridge across Akhtuba River in the Astrakhan region in Russia is now open for traffic. The new bridge is one of the key links to increase goods throughput to the ports of the Azov-Black Sea basin.
The opening of the bridge eliminates the last single-track section from Baskunchak to Astrakhan and improves conditions for heavy traffic, the Russian Railways (RZD) said.
The bridge crossing also enhances capacity along the North-South international transport corridor to Moscow and Kazakhstan, since the electrified section can now accommodate 154 pairs of trains per day instead of 75. The total length of the new engineering structure is 494 m. It has eight supports and seven spans. (ben)
