The US class I railway BNSF is to invest USD 3.57 billion in 2019. The focus will be on maintaining and expanding the rail network for about USD 2.47 billion.
The maintenance projects include 19,300 km of track surfacing and/or undercutting work, and the replacement of 860 km of rail and nearly 2.3 million rail ties.
The majority of the expansion projects are planned on the northern and southern Transcon routes, connecting southern California with Chicago IL and the Pacific Northwest to Upper Midwest respectively. BNSF also plans to invest USD 340 million in freight cars, locomotives, and other equipment. (ben)
