Blue stain fungi do not impair Epal pallets
In a recent study, the Dresden Institute of Wood Technology (IHD) investigated the influence of technical drying on the susceptibility to blue stain fungus infestation on spruce wood.
Timber that had been subjected to phytosanitary treatment was compared with additionally kiln-dried timber. It was shown that additional technical drying can reduce the risk of infestation with blue stain fungi.
The IHD tested the mechanical properties of pallet boards with and without blue stain by using bending tests. It was confirmed that the wood’s strength is not affected by these fungi. The study also demonstrated that existing blue stain had a certain inhibitory effect on mould colonisation. (mk)
