Bio-methanol fuelled “Cajun Sun” crosses Atlantic
The dual-fuel vessel “Cajun Sun” successfully arrived in Antwerp (Belgium) on 4 February 2023 after an 18-day Transatlantic voyage: departing from Geismar (USA) on 17 January, this vessel, the first methanol-fuelled ship, is the result of a collaboration between Methanex, the world’s largest methanol producer, and the Japanese shipping company MOL.
“Cajun Sun” is fuelled by bio-methanol: Mark Allard, Methanex’s senior vice president (low carbon solutions), said that it is a “tangible solution to transition towards net-zero emissions”.
This second collaboration between Methanex and MOL regarding the use of methanol shows that the companies have formed a long-term relationship to support the transition to a low-carbon future. The first collaboration took place in 2016 with the creation of the first ocean-going methanol dual-fuel tanker, called “Taranaki Sun”. (lh)
