Bimco: recycling facilities under EU regulation
The Baltic and International Maritime Council (Bimco) has insisted on the need to include non-EU recycling facilities, especially from the Indian subcontinent, in the list of authorised facilities of the European Union (EU).
In a new edition of its 'Report on the European List of Ship Recycling Facilities', first published in 2019, Bimco confirms that the non-inclusion of such facilities limits the potential for large-scale recycling. The data listed the report indicate that, although this list of approved facilities continues to grow, the new additions have not added "significant capacity to meet the demand of the shipping sector."
For Bimco, the facilities in the EU do not have enough capacity for large ship recycling and only Turkey contributes significant capacity to the EU list.
David Loosley, Bimco’s secretary and CEO, comments that, in order to meet the demand for recycling of large ships, facilities in India, Bangladesh or Pakistan, which are the biggest players in the global recycling business, should be included in the EU list.
In addition, many of them have made significant efforts to improve their facilities. “The focus is on getting some of these facilities added to the list if they meet the standards of the Hong Kong Convention, which should be ratified as soon as possible,” says Loosley. (sh)
