Biggest rise in Poland, biggest drop in Germany
In 2017, railfreight transport in the European Union rose to 416 billion tonne-kilometres (tkm), 13 billion tkm more than in 2016, or a 3.2% year-on-year increase, according to the latest statistics.
In 2017, railfreight transport reached its highest annual level since 2009. Germany recorded the largest decrease over this period (-3.9 billion tkm), followed by Latvia (- 0.9 billion tkm) and Italy (-0.3 billion tkm).
In contrast, four countries reported absolute increases of more than 1 billion tkm over the same period, namely Poland (+6.2 billion tkm), Hungary (+2.8 billion tkm), Lithuania (+1.6 billion tkm) and Romania (+1.5 billion tkm). (ben)
