Big Four for biofuel

It is an unusual coalition: Ikea Transport & Logistics Services, CMA CGM, the Good Shipping Program and the Port of Rotterdam will cooperate in an innovative partnership to test and scale the use of sustainable marine bio-fuel oil. The test will start with a trial bunkering of the oil on a CMA CGM container vessel on 19 March.

The test is being facilitated by the Good Shipping Program, an initiative dedicated to decarbonising ocean freight. The marine bio-fuel oil was developed by Good Fuels, a provider of sustainable marine biofuels to global commercial shipping, after undergoing three years of intensive testing with marine engine manufacturers.

The second-generation bio-fuel oil is completely derived from forest residues and waste oil products and expected to deliver an 80-90% well-to-propeller CO2 reduction versus fossil equivalents and virtually eliminate sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions - all without requiring engine modifications. (kd)
