BGL: CO2 toll drives inflation
Germany’s federal government is planning to add an additional CO2 component to HGV tolls as from 1 December 2023, which will roughly double the amount of the toll.
The Federal Association of Road Haulage, Logistics and Disposal (BGL) firmly rejects these plans, maintaining that the doubling of the toll will have no incentive effect in favour of combatting climate change.
BGL expects costs to increase. The association believes that consumers will have to shoulder another EUR 7.62 billion per year in addition to the already existing inflation.
As a result, medium-sized transport companies feel degraded to mere collection agencies serving the federal government. This is because the additional CO2 toll revenues are to be used almost exclusively for the railways, BGL says. (ben)
