Betting on BETs
Australia is retrofitting a diesel-electric freight train with batteries, aiming to is to run heavy haulage and general freight routes using battery technology. In this AUD 9.4 million (EUR 5.7 million) project, Aurizon, Australia’s largest railfreight hauler, will develop and trial a 1.8 MWh battery-electric tender (BET) to power a diesel-electric locomotive.
Project partner Alta Battery Technology will be responsible for the design and construction of the BET. Once operational, the BET will be trialled on one of Aurizon’s haulage routes.
Aurizon estimates that the BET could provide up to 50% of the required power on suitable commercial haulage routes. (ben)
