Belarus thrusting on with rail electrification scheme

Belarusian Railway and the Export-Import bank of China have signed a loan agreement. The funds will finance the third stage of the electrification of Homiel-Žlobin-Asipovičy and Žlobin-Kalinkavičy sections of track in Belarus. The electrification of the Žlobin-Kalinkavičy section is to be completed before the end of 2020.

Belarusian Railway has already completed electrification work on the track running between Homiel, Žlobin, Asipovičy, Maladziečna and Gudogai up to the Lithuanian border.

The country has some 1,228 km of rail track, 22.5% of which has been electrified. Belarus plans to electrify more than 60 km of track per year. Today, more than 30 Chinese electric freight locomotives operate on the Belarusian Railway network. (ben)
