BDI flying high
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI), the main index of the international dry cargo freight market, has maintained its upward trend for five consecutive sessions and recently surpassed the 2,000 point barrier, reaching 2,097 on 7 October. This is the highest mark since September last year, when the index reached 2,462 points.
The BDI, which takes into account the freights of Capesize, Panamax, Supramax and Handysize bulk carriers, increased by 22% in the last week of September, from 1,654 to 2,020 points.
By size of vessels, the Capesize are the ones that have driven up the general index. The Baltic Capesize Index stood at 4,208 points on the same day, its highest level since last July. (cd)
