Bauxite line to receive 244,000 steel sleepers
Guinea is estimated to possess more than a quarter of the world’s supply of bauxite. As it continues to increase its export capacity, it needs to upgrade existing freight lines.
As a first step, a railway line at a bauxite mine will be modernised. To this end, the Guinea Bauxite Company has contracted British Steel to deliver 244,000 steel sleepers. Together with engineering company Trackwork and rail technology specialist Pandrol, the UK manufacturer will provide 20,000 t of its 436 profile steel sleepers over the next year.
Steel sleepers are more durable than wooden sleepers, which have been traditionally used in African countries. They are also 100% recyclable. (ben)
