Basel's port economy forging ahead
The Swiss association for shipping and port management (SVS) recently held its 119th general assembly in Basel.
President Christoph Brutschin pointed out in his address that in addition to dealing with current economic challenges on the international and national level, the search for young talent remains crucial for the industry. Besides vocational education and training in Europe, e.g. in Duisburg and other places, the SVS has created in a very limited period of time a new certificate for nautical training in Switzerland which has been approved by the authorities. The support of external teaching staff like Kathrin Buehler is part of this new approach.
Brutschin also underlined the progress made by projects like the port basin III. With the association's finances in good order, the assembly voted unanimously to discharge the supervisory board and the executive board.
Three new board members were elected: Severin Plüss from Oel-Pool, Peter Stalder from BPG and Daniel Buchmüller from River Advice, who succeeds Robert Straubhaar. The latter is retiring from the board after a long period of membership but will remain committed to the cause.
After the closing of the general assembly, the government councillor of the canton Basel Stadt, Kaspar Sutter, gave an outlook on current plans and investments with regards to the port economy in the region. (cd)
