Basel-Mulhouse airport can count on express segment
With 48,000 t handled (+2% compared to 2018), express freight, an important area of activity at the binational Basel-Mulhouse airport (Euroairport), grew again in 2019, while cargo business (13,500 t) was down by 14%. The proportion of air freight transported by road feeder services likewise fell (by 5.9% to 44,500 t).
Overall, freight business was down by 3.7% year on year, to 106,075 t. EAP is thus in line with the trend for declining freight traffic that can be observed throughout Europe. One important point was Korean Air’s decision to transfer its weekly full-cargo flights to Zurich airport (see ITJ 41-42/2019, page 9).
But this loss was offset to a great extent by other carriers such as Qatar Airways Cargo, which is continuously expanding its presence on the airport, said director Matthias Suhr (centre, between Vivienne Gaskell, head of communications, and deputy director Frédéric Velter). Accordingly, Euroairport expects volumes to remain virtually unchanged at 104,000 t in 2020. (ah)
