Barge bridge in Singapore growing
The PSA Jurong Island Terminal passed the mark of more than 100,000 teu in 2021, which represents its highest throughput since 2012, and a 45% increase since 2020.
In cooperation, PSA and JTC, formerly the Jurong Town Corporation, have jointly set up the project to transfer cargo from road to short-sea shipping. The new record volume is significant in creating a more sustainable supply chain, as it has seen a reduction of 100,000 truck trips between Jurong Island and PSA Terminals on mainland Singapore.
Transportation of containers by barge is also more eco-friendly, as it can reduce up to 30% of carbon emissions for each teu as compared to trucking. The milestone is a result of nine years of close collaboration between PSA and JTC. This initiative is part of Singapore’s Green Plan 2030 to transform Jurong Island into a sustainable energy and chemicals hub. (sh)
