Barcelona's LNG leap
The port of Barcelona significantly increased its liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operations to ships in 2023, providing a total of 143,000 cbm of LNG, twice that of 2021. This growth reflects the port's commitment to LNG as a transitional fuel for reducing environmental impact.
Although the use of LNG declined in 2022 due to price rises caused by the Ukraine conflict, the situation normalised in 2023 with the commissioning of a bunkering barge, increasing LNG’s share in annual fuels at the port to 5.8%.
LNG-powered ships reduced NOx emissions by 10% out of the total port calls. The port of Barcelona aims to become emissions-neutral by 2050, with LNG playing a pivotal role in this transition. (pb)
