Barcelona prepares OPS for January ferry rollout
The port of Barcelona has installed its first onshore power supply (OPS) system for ferries at the Grimaldi terminal on Sant Bertran Wharf, set to begin operations in January. This system allows ferries to shut off their engines and run on 100% renewable electricity, reducing emissions and noise in the city's vicinity.
Developed by Vinci Energies Spain, the OPS supports two ferry berths with an initial capacity of 4 mva, expandable to 6.5 mva, and integrates with Grimaldi's adapted vessels like “Ciudad de Palma”. The installation includes a cable management system (CMS) to ensure flexibility in connecting different vessels.
A pilot phase will run for two years to refine the system and understand operational needs. The project is part of the EUR 200 million Nexigen plan to electrify key docks, build a new electrical substation, and enhance energy infrastructure throughout the port. These developments will extend electrification to cruise terminals to further decarbonise port operations and improve sustainability. (pb)
