Bar Technologies – harness wind in green fuel debate!

Portsmouth-based Bar Technologies has urged the shipping industry to give wind propulsion a central role in decarbonisation strategies, following a study by Umas and the UCL Energy Institute highlighting financing barriers for e-fuels in developing nations.

CEO John Cooper said wind is an abundant, zero-emission and low-cost energy source that is often overlooked in favour of expensive alternatives. The company’s ‘WindWings’ system is already in use and offers immediate emissions savings without major infrastructure changes.

“Wind-assisted propulsion provides a scalable and viable path for all nations to decarbonise shipping,” Cooper stated. He called on industry stakeholders and IMO delegates to acknowledge wind’s role ahead of the IMO’s MEPC 83 in April. With 2030 climate targets approaching, Bar sees wind as essential to achieving a fair and effective energy transition in its global fleet. (ah)
