Baltic: more unaccompanied traffic
In H1/2021, the Port of Kiel increased its cargo volume and processed 8.25% more goods than in the same period of the previous year. All in all, 3.66 million t of cargo were handled in Kiel H1/2021.
Ferry traffic grew disproportionately and generated a 12.7% increase in the number of trucks and trailers loaded, thus compensating for the declines suffered in H1/2020.
In cross-border traffic, the number of unaccompanied cargo units increased by 25%. Of the 100,000 trucks and trailers handled, more than half were unaccompanied for the first time.
The largest increases were recorded on the routes to Gothenburg in Sweden and Klaipeda in Lithuania. With its forest products and logistics centre, the Ostuferhafen was the strongest part of the port. (cd)
