Bad May in the Port of Los Angeles
In May, the US-West Coast port of Los Angeles moved almost 582,000 teu. This corresponds to a 29.8% decrease compared to the same month last year, though May 2019 showed an extraordinary result.
Five months into 2020, overall cargo volumes have fallen 18.6% compared to 2019. While loaded imports dropped 28.4% to 306,000 teu compared to the previous year, loaded exports plunged 37.6% to 104,000 teu. Empty containers declined 26.8% to 171,000 teu.
Though port executive director Gene Seroka, who stated the pandemic and the trade war with China as main reasons for the downturn, expects volumes to rise, he also said in a news briefing that a long-lasting drop in traffic cannot be ruled out. (mw)
